INTRODUCTION

Have you ever wondered if it's possible to rewrite your life story? Meet Margaret Rice, an experienced journalist, author, and social commentator who has discovered the transformative power of embracing the complexities of death and grief. Through her personal journey, Margaret has found a way to turn grief into purpose, and she's here to inspire you to do the same.

Margaret's career in journalism, with notable contributions to renowned publications such as The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian, and Medical Observer, provided her with a deep understanding of medical reportage and the complexities of the healthcare industry. However, a pivotal moment in 2012 forever changed the course of her life and ignited her passion for exploring the subject of death.

While working for NewsLocal Newspapers, Margaret made a profound decision to be at the bedside of her dying mother, who resided in a Sydney nursing home. This experience confronted her with the realisation that despite her extensive career in medical journalism, she knew very little about death itself. Recognising this as a widespread cultural problem, Margaret discovered that most people are either afraid of death or lack the knowledge to navigate its complexities. This ignorance leads to fear, misunderstanding, misinformation, and a lack of attention to the needs and rights of the dying.

Motivated by her mother's consent and a burning desire to address this cultural gap, Margaret began taking notes at her mother's bedside. These notes would later evolve into her groundbreaking book, "A Good Death: A Compassionate and Practical Guide to Prepare for the End of Life," published by Murdoch Books. This compassionate and practical resource empowers individuals and families to navigate the end-of-life journey with grace and understanding.

Tragically, just three days after resigning from NewsLocal to embark on writing her book, Margaret's life took another unexpected turn. Her brother Julian was killed in a motorcycle accident, exposing her to the profound depths of grief from a completely different perspective. These experiences have profoundly influenced Margaret's work and have shown her that exploring the subject of death paradoxically provides a greater appreciation for the value of life itself.

Today, Margaret channels her passion and expertise into managing the Good Grief! Website, a platform designed to increase death literacy and offer support for individuals and communities navigating the complexities of grief. As the curator of this invaluable resource, Margaret shares her extensive communication skills, providing advice, information, and compassionate guidance through workshops, newsletters, written materials, and insightful social commentary.
